The most important caves

As much as 44 caves and abysses, which represent a part of the most valuable natural heritage in Slovakia, were designated national nature monuments. As a part of the world heritage site, we can include here also other caves and abysses of the Slovak Karst. As type localities they represent morphological and genetical variety of underground karst phenomena, various forms of calcite and aragonite fill, monumentality and exceptionality of permanent glaciation, various forms of cave fauna, but also remarkable archaeological and historical monuments.

Ramsar wetlands

Ramsar wetland site - Domica was included among the internationally important underground wetlands on the basis of two basic criteria. The territory represents rare, representative and special example of natural type of underground wetland within whole Europe. The specific conditions of underground karst system and its waters offers favourable place for life of many rare, vulnerable and endangered species of terrestric and aquatic cave animals.

National nature monuments

The caves are a part of the natural heritage of the Slovak Republic. The act of the NC of SR no. 287/1994 On Nature and Landscape Protection enacted all the caves and abysses in Slovakia natural monuments. The most important ones are declared by the Ministry of the Environment the national nature monuments.

World Natural Heritage

The glamour and mystery of our world natural heritage can be admired only by visitors of show caves. Other caves and abysses of the world heritage are not open to public. Many of them are hardly accessible. Only experienced cavers and speleoalpinists with the help of roping technique or by demanding climbing or crawling can enter these caves and abysses.

News

Notice and recommendation for visitors

Dear visitors, visiting the cave requires adequate physical fitness.

The route includes:

- a longer walk in an enclosed darkened area
- reduced temperature and increased humidity
- ascent and descent
- higher number of steps (in some caves)


Special note to persons with medical limitations:

If you suffer particularly from cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems, high blood pressure, mobility limitations or are in poor physical condition, please consider taking part in the tour.

If you have any doubts about the appropriateness of your visit, please consult your doctor about your medical condition.

Suspension of food and beverage sales - Driny Cave

Dear visitors, due to technical reasons at the cave, it is not possible to provide food and drinks, including coffee vending machine services. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Parking at Demänovská Cave of Liberty

Dear visitors, the parking lot doesn't belong to cave administration. The fees are collected by different entity. Thank you for your understanding.

Domica closed

Dear visitors, the Domica cave  will be closed on 24th of September 2025  due to operational reasons. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Card payment - recommendation

Dear visitors, we would like to inform you that due to the technical conditions of payment terminals, there may be situations when card payment will not be possible. For this reason, we recommend that you have an adequate amount of cash available if you want to be sure that you will be able to visit the cave. Thank you for understanding.
