The knowledge of morphology, origin and genesis of underground spaces belong among the basic and most important data on caves. It is possible to reconstruct the past hydrographical conditions and advancement of cave development on the basis of rock shapes research and deposition of sediments. Many caves are formed in relation with the terrain of surrounding territory.
Various geomorphologic shapes in underground spaces document the evolution of caves within the geological history of the Earth and thus they are important also from the nature protection point of view. The morphology of cave spaces distinctively conditions the character of other natural components of cave environment.
Dealing with the problems of cave genesis requires a complex geomorphological research, using the knowledge on geological and hydrogeological settings of given territories together with results of cave sediments dating. The geomorphological research of caves in Slovakia is carried out and guaranteed mainly by the Slovak Caves Administration in Liptovský Mikuláš.
