High Tatras
High Tatras mountains are located in the northern part of Slovakia, on the border with Poland. The first national park in Slovakia was declared here in 1949 (TANAP) and in 1993 they were together with Polish side of the Tatra mountains designated by UNESCO a "Biospheric Reserve Tatry". The High Tatras originated in the Tertiary by uplifting of the granite massive above terrain and the present appearance gained after several periods of glaciations in the Quaternary. This orogenetic activity formed the characteristic rocky peaks (Gerlachovský Peak, Kriváň, Rysy, Lomnický Peak), deep glacier valleys (Mengusovská Valley, Veľká and Malá Studená Valley), moraines and tarns (Štrbské Tarn, Skalnaté Tarn). There are settlements with historical monuments in the surrounding (Kežmarok, Spišská Sobota, Poprad) and tourist centres (Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso, Tatranská Lomnica, Ždiar) with possibilities of accommodation. It is possible to take whole day hiking tours to wider surrounding (Low Tatras, Pieniny, Slovak Paradise, Levoča, Temple of st.Jakub, Spišský Castle, Plejsy).
Belianske Tatras
The mountain range forms a distinct 14 km long limestone crest, running in east-west direction almost perpendiculary to the main crest of the High Tatras. In spite there is no tarn in this mountain range, it is considered the most beautiful and richest in natural phenomena of the whole Tatras. Nourishing limestone soils offer here, in contrast with the High Tatras, much more varied flora. The most typical species is the Alpine edelweis (Leontopodium alpinum).
Tourism, skiing – Ždiar, Bachledova Valley, Jezersko
The Demänovská Valley is the most known and beautiful valley of the Low Tatras. It is 15 km long and is the main centre of tourism on the northern side of the mountains. Geographically and geologically consists of two different parts: upper part, adjacent to the main crest, is made of granite and forms a whole complex of smaller valleys, the lower part is cut in limestones and strongly vertically dissected.
