Zoopalaeontological exposition in the Važecká Cave

Zoopalaeontological exposition in the Važecká Cave

Open on February 1, 2006. The permanent exposition is a part of the show path for cave visitors. It is aimed at popular-educational presentation of cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), as one of the biggest extinct predators (Carnivora), which ever lived on the European continent. New elements are the skeleton reconstruction and sculpture of this animal, both situated in cave interior. They extended the original collection of bones, teeth, claws and skulls by then exhibited in the small palaeontological showcase in cave space Kostnica and other underground spaces. Outside the cave there are 2 educational boards on cave bear that give general information on body size and weight, origin and distribution, habitat, reproduction, age, food supplemented with concrete data from local findings in the Važecká Cave.

Educational boards

A simpler way of introduction of natural, cultural and historical values of caves and their surrounding are educational boards. The Slovak Caves Administration has already installed the following boards at the Važecká Cave: two boards on extinct cave bears (1996, 2006) and one board about other cave animals including invertebrates.
