Demänovská Ice Cave

The cave entrance is located in the cliff Bašta on the northern side of the Low Tatras Mts., only two kilometers northerly from the Demänovská Cave of Liberty. Ice fill has been formed in the cave for the last 500 years and in combination with calcite decoration the cave offers a very interesting tour.

Demänovská Valley

Demänovská Valley is the most known and beautiful valley of the Low Tatras Mts. It is 15 km long and it the main centre of tourism on the northern side of the mountains. Geografically and geologically it consists of two different parts: the upper part adjacent to the main crest is made of granite forming a complex of smaller valleys and the lower part is cut in limestones with distinct vertical dissection.

The valley had been settled as early as the prehistoric times, which is evidenced by the findings in the Okno Cave. The valley was not settled for a long time during the history, only in 18th and 19th century people were mining ore, building shepherd’s huts and chalets or lumberjack’s houses. The interest in the valley rose by discovering the Demänovská Cave of Liberty in 1921 and soon after an asphalt road was constructed. An exceptional boom of attendance of the the valley started after construction of the cableway from Jasná to Chopok (at present ending only in Luková).

Demänovská Valley – an important speleological region of Slovakia.
